Conquering the Coasters

My friends and I have just graduated from high school, and now, a few days later, our class is reuniting for a trip to Cedar Point for the day.  I am very excited to ride everything, and have some fun with my friends.  It is my friend Terrie's first time riding a huge roller coaster, because she has told me in the past that she is terrified of heights.  I did manage to talk her into riding the Raptor, and reassured her that it is not a very bad ride, and that she will have fun.  While we were waiting in line to get on the ride, Terrie said that she wanted to not back out and try the ride.  She also mentioned that if she did not like the ride, at least she would not wonder in the future if the ride was fun, and if she missed out on a great experience.  I think that it is brave of her to conquer her fear of heights, and try something new.  She may love the ride, and want to ride more roller coasters in the future.  If she does not like the ride, at least she will know not to ride it again.

Terrie looked nervous when she sat down on the ride with Emily, and Holli, but I think she will enjoy it.  Lauren, Stephanie, and I gave them a reassuring thumbs up and watched as the ride started to inch forward, and make its way slowly up to the first drop.  After their car plunged downward at the top of the first hill, it was our turn to start the ride.  All the speed, twists, and turns gave everyone such a huge adrenaline rush, that we were suprised when it was over so quickly.  Holli, Emily, and Terrie, now safely on the ground, met us at the exit gate.  Terrie was very excited, and said that she loved the ride and had a lot of fun.  She said that the only bad part of the ride was when their car reached the top of the first hill, and the park below them looked so small.  I told her that she was going to enjoy the ride, and being nervous was ridiculous in the first place.  I was happy that she was able to enjoy herself, and that she did not change her mind about going on the ride at the last minute.

It was interesting the change that Terrie went through after riding the Raptor.  She was relieved like everyone else, but she was more excited to ride other things than she would have been, if she would have not rode that first ride.  She told me that she wanted to start out with something somewhat intense, but not something that would ruin roller coasters for her entirely.  This made me think about the Raptor, because it is intense at first, but then the ride mellows out and becomes more fun, and less scary.  It was also conveniently located at the beginning of the park.  Obviously it was a good choice, because Terrie wanted to continue to try new rides throughout the day.  She did disagree with me about some rides, like the Wicked Twister and the Gemini, but she did ride everything else that we went on as the day progressed.  I think that it is a good idea not to push other people to try something new right away, but to at least invite them to think about it.

Unfortunatley, after the ride everyone felt a little sick, so we had to take a break for a while.  Terrie told me that even though she was not feeling well, it was worth it to experience something new and exciting.  She even rode the Cork Screw, Disaster Transport, and the Iron Dragon before we left the park for the day.  Those rides are not as intense as the Raptor, but at least Terrie found some roller coasters she liked.  Terrie also rode the Mine Ride, but she liked that coaster to begin with.  It was fun when Lauren, Stephanie, and Terrie pretended that the ride was scary by screaming sarcastically that they were going to die at the top of the first small hill.  Terrie told me that the day was a great experience, and she thanked me for talking her into riding the Raptor.  She told me that if she had not tried the Raptor, she would have only rode the Mine Ride, and missed out on the other fun rides that Cedar Point has.  It was great that I was able to support my friend, and encourage her to try something new, even though it was hard to convince her to ride anything a week before the trip.
